Measuring Non-Traditional Learning for Credit

Because Eastern wishes learners to continue to build a strong educational foundation, and to reach their future goals as quickly as possible, the College offers several pathways — including the statewide Board of Governors Adult Degree Completion Program — for students to earn college credit for their life experiences that are comparable to college-level learning.

In accordance with established college practices, and based on the judgment of academic professionals and, when necessary, other appropriately-credentialed professionals, Eastern will validate such "non-traditional" learning that is equivalent to courses or program outcomes that meet requirements for the college degree in which the student enrolls.  

To validate and award credit for "non-traditional" college-level learning, Eastern uses testing instruments and assessment measures including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Standardized tests scores
    • CLEP: CLEP evaluates and documents learning in a range of subjects: The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps you receive college credit for what you already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course. Developed by the College Board, CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program.
    • DSST/DANTESIt’s Your Life, Take Credit for it. The DSST/DANTES (Defense Activity for Nontraditional Educational Support/ DANTES Subject Standardized Test) credit by exam program gives students the opportunity to receive college credit for life experience and  knowledge and skills acquired outside of a traditional classroom — including learning from job experience, independent study, private reading and hobbies.

      Recommended for credit by the American Council on Education (ACE), the program offers 38 exams in diverse subject areas such as health, ethics, business, finance, technology, humanities, mathematics, physical science, and more. (The DSST/DANTES program is owned by Prometric, a global leader in testing and assessment, and a form of prior learning assessment has been placing students on the fast track to college degrees since 1986.   • Evaluation of sponsored instruction in a non-college setting
    • ACE: The American Council on Education's College Credit Recommendation Service (CREDIT) connects workplace learning with colleges and universities by helping adults gain access to academic credit for formal courses and examinations taken outside traditional degree programs. It provides both a recommended passing score and number of credits that could be awarded to successful students. 

      Since 1978, hundreds of organizations—including Fortune 500 companies, professional and volunteer associations, schools, training suppliers, labor unions, and government agencies—have relied on CLEP evaluations to facilitate the education levels of their employees and members — and saved millions on tuition-assistance dollars.
    • National CCRS (formerly PONSI ): Created in 1973 as a program of the Board of Regents of The University of the State of New York, the National College Credit Recommendation Service (formerly the "National Program on Non-collegiate Sponsored Instruction") evaluates courses and examination programs offered by non-collegiate organizations nationwide, as well as internationally, and makes recommendations on their comparability to college-level instruction).
  • Assessment of credit for military training
  • Demonstration of college-level learning through portfolio review
  • Instructional-based challenge examinations
  • Learning acquired in institutions that are not accredited
  • Special assessment of licensure, certification and formal training programs

Please Note*: Eastern West Virginia Community & Technical College has established specific procedures for the granting of college credit from non-traditional sources:

  • *Faculty, academic professionals and well-credentialed professionals, under the supervision of the Dean for Academic and Student Services, will determine credit awards for all non-traditional credit requests. 
  • *To receive credit through non-traditional methods, students must be able to demonstrate knowledge (theory) and skills (practical application). Records of work experience alone will not be sufficient.
  • *College credit will be awarded only for learning experiences that have occurred after high school.
  • *Non-traditional credit may not duplicate previously earned credit.
  • *Any course in which the grade of “Credit” has been assigned is not used in computation of the student’s grade point average.
  • *Non-traditional credit cannot be awarded for any course which a student has previously completed at any college.
  • *Students who plan to use credit from non-traditional sources to meet the degree requirements of other institutions should contact the receiving institution to determine transferability of credits.
