Health care professionals who can process incoming patients, draw blood and read EKG results provide a versatile and valuable resource to any medical practice. In response to the growing need for health care professionals with multiple skills, the Medical Assistant Program is designed to give students a comprehensive suite of administrative and clinical skills. The Medical Assistant Career Track program includes the subject areas:

  • Medical Terminology
  • Medical Assistant / Admin
  • EKG Technician
  • Phlebotomy Technician

Individually courses in these areas are very valuable in today's healthcare economy. Packaged together in the Medical Assistant Program, they provide the foundation for a highly marketable healthcare professional. And after completing the program, an aspiring healthcare professional would possess the skills required to perform multiple tasks in a complex and dynamic healthcare environment. In addition to acquiring multiple healthcare professional skills, students who successfully complete this program would be eligible to sit for multiple national certification exams..

 Medical Administration

This course prepares students to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry. Administrative Medical Assistants, Medial Secretary, Medical Records Clerk, and Health Unit Coordinators are all positions in great demand. Administrative medical assistants update and file patients' medical records, fill out insurance forms, and arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services. They also perform tasks less specific to medical settings, such as answering telephones, greeting patients, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and handling billing and bookkeeping.

This Program covers important background information on anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, insurance billing and coding, medical ethics, customer service and legal aspects. This program is intended to provide students with a well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that a student can gain the necessary skills required - to either obtain or advance to a health care administration position.

 

 EKG Technician Certification

This comprehensive 45-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam - and other National Certification Exams.

This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing.

Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices.

 Pharmacy Technician Career Track Program

Today’s dynamic pharmacy environment requires that professionals understand clinical, administrative and reimbursement issues that the pharmacy organization faces on a daily basis.
Pharmacy Technicians work in pharmacies under the direction of a pharmacist. Their main responsibility is filling prescriptions according to doctors' orders for patients.

This comprehensive 120 hour program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.
Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.

The Pharmacy Technician Career Track program is designed to give the student a comprehensive suite of administrative and clinical skills necessary to compete for high paying health care – pharmacy jobs.
It includes the following subject areas: 

  • Medical Terminology
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Medical Billing & Coding (includes the opportunity to sit for the NHA Certification exam.

Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and online billing and reimbursement.

Additionally, this program includes a medical billing and coding course which provides the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-9 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures.

This 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. 
Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely.
Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.  Note: There is no outside externship rotation included with this program.

The course includes the opportunity to sit for the NHA Certification exam.

 Medical Billing and Coding Career Track

Today's healthcare industry relies heavily on well-trained employees who understand the many aspects of service to patients. The more skills an employee brings to the job market, the more versatile and valuable he or she will be to employers.

The Medical Billing and Coding Career Track program combines the necessary skills of a medical billing and coding professional with the unique day-to-day and customer service requirements of a Medical Assistant Administration professional. In one program package, learners receive the following courses:

  • Medical Terminology
  • Medical Assistant Administration
  • Medical Billing & Coding

The course includes training in the following subject areas:

  • Billing, Coding and Clerical
  • Medical Records
  • Greeting Patients and Scheduling Appointments
  • Preparing Patients for Examination;
  • Documenting Vital Signs (e.g. blood pressures, pulse, respiration, and temperature)
  • Performing Simple Lab Tests
  • Etc.

The program also includes the opportunity to sit for the NHA Certification exam, and covers, in detail:

  • reviewing hospital records
  • calculating charges for a patient's hospital stay
  • collecting physician charges and patient data to ensure that claims are submitted to insurance carriers accurately
  • determining codes for physician's procedures and diagnoses (using ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding protocols) for third party billing purposes
  • additional skills

For students who complete the suggested practical work experience (6 months to 2 years), this program offers qualifications to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other National Certification Exams.

 Medical Terminology

The Medical Terminology course covers a broad range of medical vocabulary that deals with systems of human anatomy and medical treatment. This 15-hour class will show students how to identify the different parts of words that make up medical vocabulary, including prefixes, suffixes and root words. This approach provides learners the basic skills to break down and define the medical terms used in the healthcare field.

Eastern is an approved site to offer and proctor National Health Career Association Certification (NHA Certification) exams. Each of the programs below includes the opportunity to sit for the NHA Certification exam for that specific area during the last scheduled session for the chosen course.

Also, under special circumstances, Eastern can arrange to offer and proctor NHA Certification exams by special arrangement.
