May 10: Shelter Volunteer Training & Emergency Communication/Intro to Ham Radio From Red Cross

To assist the tri-counties’ emergency services offices in sheltering displaced people from natural or man-made disasters, our tri-county area needs trained Shelter Volunteers. The Red Cross will offer both a Sheltering Training and an Emergency Communication/Intro to Ham Radio Operations workshop, May 10, from 8:00 am - 2:30 pm, at the Moorefield Intermediate School, 345 Caledonia Heights Road (second drive just past the Moorefield Middle School entrance) in Moorefield, WV.

Both classes are open to the public, ages 18 and up.  A small registration fee includes lunch. 

Classes will cover how to open, manage and close an emergency shelter, whether small, medium or large in capacity. Shelter Volunteers will also learn the ins and outs of emergency communications, including an introduction to ham radio operation, both of which serve vital functions for emergency shelters.

Because emergencies may one day require churches, club houses, community centers and businesses in the tri-county area to serve as shelters, or to provide shelter-in-place refuge, the training sponsors encourage members of these groups to attend the May 10 trainings. 

Training sponsors include: American Red Cross, WV Citizen Corps, The Potomac Highlands Amateur Radio Club,  Hardy County OEM and Hardy County CERT, Grant County Training Center and Eastern WV Community & Technical College.
