From a distance, the turning blades of a wind turbine farm lace the
skyline with graceful curves and technological promise. Closer up, the constant churning tha‐
wump, tha‐wump, tha‐wump may provide less charm.
Job creation perches high on the list of anyone who thinks
seriously about the future of the economy. But recent data suggests that most new net job
creation comes from new, start‐up businesses. So in this political season, as one central debate
focuses on job creation, one small community college is taking a pro‐active approach.
— In a burst of bipartisan patriotism just in time for the 4th
of July, Congress has passed the student loan bill. So now, interest rates on Stafford student
loans won’t double from the current low rates of 3.4‐percent. That’s good news for everyone
thinking about registering for college this coming fall semester.
“Life’s journey is a like a road map. Different individuals
can take different roads and still arrive in the same town.” So began Robert Eagle’s keynote
address to the 2012 GED® graduation ceremony held in Petersburg June 7.
As both the White House and the WV statehouse have
launched special websites to ease the transition of veterans returning from military to civilian
life, a local
community college is also offering special services to make the vets’ re‐integration successful.
Earlier this spring, in the rotunda of the capitol in Charleston, Governor Earl Ray
Tomblin, center, presented a certificate and medallion to Wardensville’s Melissa Shank, 2nd
from right. The event honored Shanks as Eastern WV Community and Technical
College’s representative on the 2012 All‐West Virginia Academic Team, and a nominee to the
All‐USA Community College Academic team.
“One time, when I asked a fellow student a personal question,
my daughter told me to ‘hush up,’” said Arthur’s Dreama Kelley, recalling a dramatic moment in
a local college classroom last semester. “She stopped short of calling me ‘Dreama,’ but I did get
several ‘Mom!’s’,” Kelly chuckled, “followed by energetic eye‐rolls.”
On a gorgeous spring afternoon, as the temperature soared into the
80’s, a gathering of students, friends and families, college staff and faculty gathered to
commemorate Eastern WV Community and Technical College’s eleventh annual Founders Day.
